CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Marketing and advertising jobs are expected to grow 6% more than the national average over the next decade, according to federal data reviewed by CNBC.
Even better news for potential job-seekers: Many of these roles don't require a college degree and offer salaries of at least $100,000, plus they have opportunities to work from home. Some listings show hourly pay up to $250.
As far as the skills you need, experts say you should narrow down your focus to three key areas: social media, strong writing and search engine optimization, or SEO, for short. SEO is a way of describing techniques a company can use to make sure Google and other search engines push a company's website to the top of the results page.
Even though many jobs don't require a degree, a lot of them will want experience in the field, with employers looking for experienced workers who can make up for not having a diploma. Some of the best-paying jobs in the field will want anywhere from five-to-seven years of experience.
If you don't have that much (or any) experience, here's what you can do. There are several online courses and certification programs that can keep you in the competition for some of these slots.
Sign-ups for digital marketing and related online courses are available through many institutions, like eCornell and UCLA. Closer to Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is offering a course that starts as early as December.
