SAN ANTONIO -- The class of 2000 at Highlands High School honored officer Robert 'Bobby' Deckard Friday with a silent candlelight vigil.
Close to 100 alumni showed up to remember the slain officer.
Former classmates talked about Deckard being a kind-hearted person. They said he was active in sports and other school activities.
Deckard's uncle Eddie Williams, who also attended Highlands, was there and offered a few words.
I've come to grips that he's passed. It just doesn't seem real, Williams said.
Williams recalled going to his nephew's football games.
We were always in the stands, and that's what he would always do -- look to see if we were there, Williams said. And if we were there, that kind of like made his day.
Williams was at the hospital with his nephew from Dec. 8 through Dec. 20, when Deckard passed away.
Deckard was shot in the head during a high-speed chase with alleged robbery suspects, Jenevieve Ramos and Shawn Ruiz.
Williams said fellow officers and the San Antonio Police Department have helped the family get through the tragedy.
The men in blue. They have been phenomenal in their support of being there with Bobby, being there with the family. Without them, I don't know how we would have done it, Williams said.
Williams said his nephew had invited him to ride along in his patrol car. Unfortunately, that experience will never happen.
Instead, Williams plans to follow the trial and to be there for Deckard's children.
They're going to have to remember their father from what other people tell them. What a good man he was. What a good officer he was.
Officer Deckard leaves behind two children and two step-children; all under eight years of age.
Public visitation for Officer Deckard will be held on Jan. 3, from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Church services will follow on Jan. 4, at Cornerstone Church, beginning at 10 a.m.; immediately followed by Deckard's interment at Mission Burial Park, located at 17000 S.E. Military Dr.
