HOUSTON — A flight from Houston to Mexico City had to return to Houston Friday due to volcanic ash.

The United Airlines flight 1088 left George Bush Intercontinental Airport at 11:52 a.m. and landed again at 2:05 p.m. Friday, according to FlightAware. The flight was originally due to land in Mexico City International Airport Benito Juárez in Mexico City.
United Airlines confirmed that the flight had to return due to volcanic ash. FlightAware showed other flights continuing to take off and land at the Mexico City airport.
This is the second flight involving a Houston airport we've reported on today. Earlier, a flight from Denver to Houston Hobby had to turn around because of a battery fire.
Popocatépetl is an active volcano near Mexico City. NASA Earth Observatory shared images of a large smoke plume issuing from the volcano on October 25, 2024. Volcanoes have caused disruptions to flights in the past.
The plane is an Airbus A320.
