HOUSTON — A massive sinkhole in west Houston forced the evacuation of eight homes on Saturday, according to the Houston Fire Department.
They said a cistern collapsed, causing the sinkhole in the gated community of Memorial Green near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Gessner Road.
"It was such a large, I mean a really large sinkhole," Rick McKee told us. "When they built Memorial Green, they put in these real large cisterns."
No one was hurt but nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
HFD said engineers were on the scene to assess the damage.
While the hole didn't appear to be growing, people who live nearby are concerned.
"I've seen other properties where the hole will get bigger if the rain continues, so hopefully we'll get a break in the weather," resident Rick said.
Steven Rosen has friends who live inside the gated community and stopped by Saturday afternoon after he learned about the sinkhole. He was relieved to learn that his friends didn't have to evacuate.
"I am very happy to know my friends are fine. And I hope the rest of the people, in the complex here, don't have any more problems," said Rosen
A section of the shopping center right behind the sinkhole has been fenced off.
