2 dead, 4 injured after driver runs from police, crashes on I-35 at New Braunfels Avenue

I-35 at New Braunfels Avenue was shut down Wednesday due to a major crash, officials say.

SAN ANTONIO — Four people have been transported to the hospital, and two people were killed after a crash on I-35 at New Braunfels Avenue Wednesday morning.

The San Antonio Police Department provided preliminary information that is subject to change, they said.

It all started around 7:45 a.m. when an SAPD officer noticed an SUV driving erratically near I-35 at New Braunfels Avenue. The officer began to follow the vehicle in order to make a traffic stop, but the driver of the SUV sped away and ended up hitting a metal pole that caused the vehicle to flip several times.

Two men were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, SAPD said. Four other people were taken to the hospital, two in critical condition and two in serious condition. One person was detained, but no other details about that person was given.

That portion of the interstate was shut down due to the crash as well as the on ramps and off ramps near I-35 and Brooklyn. Drivers were being diverted and asked to avoid the area.
