SAN ANTONIO -- A 26-year-old inmate at the Bexar County Jail died Friday evening in an apparent suicide, according to a spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Nathaniel Gamez was found unconscious inside his single-person cell by a correctional officer around 7 p.m., Paul Berry with BCSO said. Attempts to resuscitate Gamez were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead 20 minutes later by first responders.

Berry said Gamez was alert and in normal/good condition during a security check, just half an hour earlier.

An official cause of death is pending the Bexar County Medical Examiner's office; however, Berry said a preliminary investigation suggested Gamez took his own life.

Crime scene investigators from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office were notified and opened an investigation.

Police said Gamez had been booked into the detention center after his latest arrest on Thursday, Feb. 6. Gamez was being held on the sixth floor of the jail, in the administrative segregation unit.
