San Antonio — An inmate who attempted suicide at the Bexar County jail on Saturday was taken off life support Thursday. A second inmate who also attempted suicide the same day was released from the hospital as of Sunday morning.

The two separate suicide attempts by inmates were halted by detention deputies.

Just after 6:30 pm Saturday, a 32-year-old male inmate was found in his cell attempting suicide by hanging. A Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy interrupted the suicide attempt and immediately began performing CPR.

That inmate was transported to University Hospital. He was later identified as Domingo Altamirano, Jr. BCSO said his family made the decision to take him off life support Thursday afternoon.

Altamirano was being held on charges of sexual assault of a child and possession of a controlled substance.

BCSO said the Texas Rangers will be investigating the death going forward, and the sheriff's office will proved assistance if needed.

A second suicide attempt was reported at 7:29 pm on Saturday.

A 33-year-old man was found inside of his cell attempting suicide. A unit officer interrupted his attempt. He remained alert and responsive. He was transported to the hospital for further evaluation as a precaution.

He was released from the hospital and transported back to the Bexar County jail.

BCSO confirmed he was being held on two drug-related charges, felony possession of a firearm, and four charges of retaliation.
