Uvalde CISD lists police chief job; interim leader set to resign

School officials say they are committed to finding a successor who will uphold the standards of safety and security that the community deserves.

SAN ANTONIO — Joshua Gutierrez, who replaced embattled Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo as the district's interim police chief in the wake of the Robb Elementary School shooting, has submitted his resignation, district officials say.

If approved by the district school board, Gutierrez's last day will be June 17. Now the district says it's begun the search process to find a new chief.

A job listing posted on the district's website Monday says Uvalde CISD is placing extra emphasis on candidates with previous experience as a chief, in the military or in "school-based lase enforcement."

"We are committed to finding a successor who will uphold the standards of safety and security that the community deserves," the district said in a statement to KENS 5.

Gutierrez took the reins in November 2022, three months after Arredondo was fired following a summer of intense scrutiny over his on-site leadership at Robb on the day when 21 people, including 19 children, were killed in a mass shooting.
