Investigation finds SAPD officer over-corrected on turn in deadly crash

A Bexar County Sheriff's Office crash report released Wednesday found that an SAPD officer who died in a July 10 crash involving his off-duty vehicle had over-corrected his steering as he drove around a curve, sending him into oncoming traffic.

SAPD Officer Paul Rios, 41, died at the scene of the crash. He was a six-year veteran of the department.

The report said that the driver of the other vehicle, a Ford F-250 that was traveling westbound on East Borgfeld Road, didn't have time to avoid the collision.

The investigation also cited Rios for being either "fatigued or asleep" as a contributing cause of the crash.

Two of Officer Rios' children were in the the vehicle at the time of the crash. They were both taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the F-250 also was hospitalized. Officers said he cooperated with the investigation.
