SAN ANTONIO — The former CEO of USAA and retired two-star general died Thursday night, officials said.

Joe Robles, 78, retired from the financial services company in 2015 and shortly after revealed he was diagnosed with Parkinson's, according to multiple reports.

In a statement, current president and CEO Wayne Peacock praised Robles' leadership and commitment to the community.

"Joe’s visionary leadership and commitment to serving others had a tremendous impact on our country, our teammates at USAA and our members. He was a Soldier at his core. With nearly three decades of service to the Army, Joe knew what it meant to serve and he brought that experience to USAA. As CEO, he led the association through the largest period of growth in our history and fostered a culture of innovation to better serve the military community and their families. His legacy continues through the service we provide every day. Our thoughts and prayers are with Patty and their children during this difficult time," USAA president and CEO Wayne Peacock said in a statement.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg also paid tribute to Robles.

"[Robles] exemplified a life of selfless service, answering the call locally and nationally time and time again," he said.
