HOUSTON — On Thursday morning, the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston was filled with excitement and hundreds of teachers.
"This is historic. I’m excited," Mavis Yon said.
"This is history happening right now," Danielle Sullivan said.
"I’m blessed to be here. I’m excited. I don’t care if I’ve been in line for an hour, it’s going to be worth it," Claudia Moreno told KHOU 11 News.
The teachers showed up to watch Vice President Kamala Harris speak on the last day of the American Federation of Teachers convention. The collective excitement only grew after the speech, which seemed to galvanize the crowd.
"She’s smart, she’s enthusiastic, she wants the job," Arin Reeb said.
"I heard about moving the country forward instead of in the past. I heard about fighting for the majority of Americans," Angela Schultz told KHOU 11 News.
Many of the teachers explained the speech also tugged on emotional strings and empowered the men, women and children in attendance.
"At 40, I’m going to be the President of the United States," 10-year-old Paris Ndu told KHOU 11 News.
