SAN ANTONIO — Family, friends, and even strangers gathered outside Sam Houston High School Sunday afternoon in honor of a former student who was killed more than a month ago.
22-year-old Khadija Derry was gunned down outside her family’s home on December 6 in Converse.
Converse Police said they are aggressively working the case but have not made any arrests.
“It could’ve been your granddaughter, your sister, your loved one, but instead it was ours,” Kuquanda Perkins, Khadija’s mother, said.
Perkins said she does not know why her daughter was killed or who did it.
“22-years-old, probably 120 pounds soaking wet, shot I’d say probably more than 12 times with an AR-15,” Perkins said as she described what her daughter went through.
Converse Police said the shooting happened around 8 p.m. outside the home on Arundal Garden. Derry was sitting inside her car.
Police said a surveillance video from a neighbor’s home showed a four-door vehicle drive up, two people got out, and fired 18-20 rounds into Derry’s vehicle.
“It just seems like it was yesterday,” Derry’s Uncle, Kevin Shandy said.
Shandy said when he got the call about the shooting, he rushed over, only to see his niece being treated by first responders. It would be an hour later, when she was pronounced dead.
“We’re full of questions of right now, that’s why we want to make sure we get this out there,” Shandy said.
Derry’s family is determined to keep this case from going cold. They want her to be remembered as the bright, determined, athlete and young woman she was.
Her mother announced at the memorial, they plan to start a foundation in Derry’s honor to help local athletes. She added, they are also working with one of her former coaches to start a scholarship in her honor.
