What to know before your kids head back to school, and back to their extracurricular activities

SAN ANTONIO — Kids are getting ready to step back into class for most districts and of many will be stepping on to fields or courts for athletics.

We have football and volleyball season right around the corner and community sports all year long, but if it's your first time putting your kids in sports, you both might not know where to begin.

Let kids try out and play multiple sports to see what they really like and what they can specialize in as they get older.

Medical experts say the have kids coming in now needing treatment because they're doing the same thing so often they get overuse injuries, so start young don't be in a rush.

If you're going to practice with your kid at home, doctors want to make sure they're still in the practice gear.

“This equipment usually protecting very important parts of your body, whether it be, your head or things like that,” said Dr. Christopher Case, Christus Children's Hospital. “So it is important to have kind of properly, fitted equipment, just to make sure that we can prevent, injuries and things like that”

A special piece of equipment they want kids to have is a mouth guard. A lot of kids don't like to wear them, but they're important to have to keep their teeth safe.

Another good rule of thumb, especially in this heat, is to stay hydrated.

Drink tons of water, get electrolytes and take breaks.

Experts say its best for athletes to drink water every 15 to 20 minutes.
