Lakewood Church opens its doors for members of Lighthouse Church after it was damaged during Hurricane Beryl

Lighthouse Church will host service every Sunday in August at Lakewood Church.

HOUSTON — A Houston church is lending a helping hand to another mega-church after Hurricane Beryl caused severe damage.

Lakewood Church opened its doors to a couple thousand members of Lighthouse Church Sunday night for service.

According to Lighthouse Church, they have about 3,500 members who attend service in person every week, but after Beryl hit, they were left with no place to go.

"This is an experience that, when a church goes through things, we grow through things," Darrell Sharp said.

Sharp said he's been a member since the church began almost 15 years ago.

"Whatever happens, it only happens for a short period of time, and then God will take us through it," Sharp said.

The theme for service is revival and resiliency after Beryl damaged the church's primary north campus and the three other campuses. The north campus was left inoperable.

"With our church, some people were affected twice," Lighthouse Church Senior Pastor Keion Henderson said. "They were affected at home and then again at their church home."

Henderson estimates about $20 million in damages. The roof collapsed in several areas including the sanctuary. They also have a lot of water damage.

It has not been easy, Henderson said. Finding a place big enough to worship has also been a challenge.

"The only weeks we have secured are the next four. We're still looking for what happens once August is over and going forward," Henderson said.

They are keeping the faith that they'll be back at their own sanctuary soon.

"We wanted people to realize that we're going to bounce back better than before, no matter where we end up," Henderson said.

There is no timeline for its re-opening. In the meantime, Lighthouse Church will host service every Sunday in August at Lakewood Church.
