Grandmother of 7-year-old boy shot at Lakewood Church shares update on his condition

Samuel, the son of the Lakewood Church shooter, was shot in the head. It's still unknown if he was shot by his mother or the officers who were shooting at her.

HOUSTON — The 7-year-old boy who was shot in the Lakewood Church shooting is now breathing on his own, according to his grandmother.

In a Facebook post shared Saturday, Walli Carranza said Samuel Moreno was able to be extubated on day 13 and is "breathing well."

Carranza said although Samuel is no longer on a ventilator, he has developed problems that "may require another form of neurosurgery."

"His sixth since two bullets ripped through his brain and shattered his skull into shards of bone," Carranza said in the post.

Carranza said doctors have been very transparent throughout the process and they said "Sam will never be Sam again."

Last week, Carranza shared a post saying Samuel had to have half of his right skull removed in two surgeries that were done in less than 24 hours.

"He was in cardiac arrest multiple times and no one can determine whether he has significant brain activity," Carranza said.

Samuel is the son of Genesee Moreno, the woman who walked inside Lakewood Church on Sunday and started shooting an AR-15. She was killed in a shootout with two off-duty officers, police said.

Samuel was shot in the head during the exchange of gunfire. It's still unknown if Samuel was shot by his mother or the officers who were shooting at her.

A 57-year-old man was also shot. He was hit in the leg but released from the hospital the day after the shooting.
