Last week's hail storm declared most expensive in Texas history

The hailstorm that hit South Texas last week has now been declared one of the most expensive in state history.

SAN ANTONIO -- The hailstorm that hit South Texas last week has now been declared one of the most expensive in state history.

According to the Insurance Council of Texas, the damages are estimated to be nearly $1.4 billion. KENS 5 talked to several residents who are still struggling to repair the damages. Resident Jorge Gaza says he didn't have a chance to go outside to cover his car and watched the hail dent his car from inside his home.

"There was really nothing you could do. The hail was so large. What it did to the car, I can't imagine getting hit by it," Garza said.

State Farm Insurance, the largest insurer in the state, says last year it received 52,000 claims state-wide. For the months of March and April of this year, it's approaching 70,000 claims.

We've seen some heavy damage mainly to the houses that have skylights 'cause the hail broke the skylights. Water was coming in," said Edmundo Ramirez, a State Farm claims adjuster.

State Farm spokesman Chris Picic says insurance rates won't increase all of a sudden because of the storms. He says the rates are calculated over several years.
