Bexar County deputy on administrative duty after hitting suspect with car, BCSO says; video of July incident released

The deputy in question is on administrative duty as an investigation continues.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff's Office says a deputy remains on administrative duty as the agency investigates a July incident in which officials say a suspect was hit with the deputy's patrol unit while trying to flee.

That suspect is now in custody.

BCSO also released new dashcam footage of the incident, which unfolded early in the morning of July 16 in west Bexar County. Officials say Deputy Steven Antu was patrolling the area when he saw someone "recklessly displaying a firearm" out the front passenger-side window of a Toyota Camry he was traveling in around 2:30 a.m.

The footage was shared by the agency on YouTube. It shows what happened shortly after, when, while starting to move through an intersection, the passenger can be seen waving what appears to be a gun out the window again. Another car is seen just feet away.

BCSO officials said they started chasing a car Ivan Castillo was traveling in when he was seen waving a firearm out a window.

Antu can be seen continuing to follow the car into a neighborhood, eventually flipping on his lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the driver over. Categorizing the situation as a pursuit, BCSO said the car eventually stopped in the 6500 block of Donley Cove in the Alamo Ranch area.

As Antu pulls up behind the Camry, the passenger – identified as 21-year-old Ivan Castillo – can be seen hopping out, dropping and quickly picking up what BCSO said was a  handgun, and making a run for it. Antu continues to chase in his patrol unit, and is seen in the video driving in Castillo's direction as he tries to cross the street.

The footage ends just as Antu appears about to hit Castillo.

Castillo suffered "serious injuries" as a result of the collision and was hospitalized, BCSO said, adding that he faces evading arrest charges. His handgun, which was loaded and equipped with an extended magazine, was recovered at the scene, according to officials.

"This incident is still under investigation with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office criminal investigations division, public integrity unit, internal affairs unit, and with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office Civil Rights Division," the agency said.

Antu has been with BCSO for seven years.

Court records show Castillo was released on a personal recognizance bond on July 19. He also faced charges of unlicensed carry, but that case was rejected, according to records. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 17.
