Investigation underway after welfare check turns into deadly shooting involving law enforcement officer, Bandera officials say

Deputies say the man who died from his injuries was a 68-year-old man.

SAN ANTONIO — An investigation is underway and many questions are still unanswered after authorities say a welfare check resulted in a fatal shooting involving law enforcement in Bandera County.

County officials say sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call for gunfire around 11 a.m. Friday at an unspecified location. According to authorities, a 68-year-old man died from injuries sustained in the incident.

But officials have not said what led up to the shooting. It's also unknown how many law enforcement personnel, if any, discharged their weapons, nor if the man was armed.

The man has been identified as 68-year-old Sterling Mark Brantley.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, a Bandera County spokesperson said.
