SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police shot and killed a man after they say he fled from a traffic stop early Monday morning.
San Antonio Police say they attempted to pull over a vehicle with two occupants at S.W. 29th Street at West Commerce Street near North General McMullen Drive around 1 a.m. for a traffic stop on the west side of town.
Both occupants fled during the attempted stop, and during the pursuit, one of the occupants pulled out a handgun, according to police. Two SAPD officers fired their service weapons, striking the man who pulled the gun.
Chief William McManus says the man was running from police when they shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. McManus noted the officers' body-camera video will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
SAPD policy states the "Department will post audio and video recordings of Critical Incidents, after approval by the Chief of Police, within 30 days of the date of an incident."
There are exceptions to the release timeline depending on multiple factors, including whether the video would jeopardize the investigation and to protect confidential sources.
A witness, who didn't wish to be identified and heard the gunshots, shared video she captured on her phone of the aftermath. In the video, the man is seen on the ground in a laundromat parking lot. Two officers have their firearms fixed on the individual who is on his stomach not moving. An officer is seen handcuffing the man then searching through the individual's clothing.
This is the 23rd shooting involving San Antonio Police this year.
Both SAPD officers have five years of service on the force. They will both be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
Police say the man who was killed appeared to be in his early 30s. He has now been identified as Steven Lopez, 45.
