SAN ANTONIO — A dog living on a south-side property with a history of calls for aggressive behavior was shot and killed by a San Antonio police officer when officials say it lunged at him as he was trying to enter his patrol car.
That officer wasn't hurt. The dead dog, as well as another that was living on the property in the 11900 block of Cink Drive, was taken into the hands of Animal Control Services (ACS).
Police say they initially responded to the home on Thursday after two adults were bitten, resulting in "mild injuries." An officer "discharged his weapon in self-defense" at that point too, according to authorities, but no animals were hit. ACS eventually arrived, but the dogs were back on their property, preventing animal control officers from taking them.
On Friday morning, officials say, an SAPD officer found two dogs believed to have been the same ones on the porch, upon which ACS was called back. Police were able to "distract the dogs several times while waiting for the ACS officer's arrival," authorities say, before one of them eventually lunged and the officer fired.
Police say they know who the dogs' owner is, but they haven't been found yet. It's unknown what charges officials may pursue if they're taken into custody.
It's unclear where the two adults were in proximity to the dogs' home when they were attacked Thursday. Dog owners can be fined by the city if their animals are found off their property, but a City Council member is pushing to strengthen those penalties.
