'Please continue to pray': SAPD officer shot during DWI stop released from hospital

The suspect fled the scene early Saturday before police say he took his own life later that night.

SAN ANTONIO โ€” Three days after an officer with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) was shot while attempting a traffic stop, he has been released from the hospital.

The department announced the update on social media, and asked the community to "keep this officer and his family in your thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery."

It was early Saturday morning on the far west side when police spotted and tried to pull over a driver believed to have been drunk behind the wheel, according to SAPD Chief William McManus. When officers approached the vehicle, McManus said, a passenger started shooting toward them.

An unidentified officer was hit twice by the gunfire and rushed to the hospital.

Meanwhile, officers returned fire at the suspect, who jumped into the driver's seat and fled. Hours later, on Saturday night, police went to a neighborhood a few miles away to try and arrest the gunman, who faced charges of attempted capital murder.

SAPD said the 18-year-old suspect, Liendro Luevano, barricaded himself in a home and is believed to have taken his own life. Police have not released information about the others who were in the car Saturday morning.
