SAN ANTONIO — Newly released body camera footage and portions of 911 calls provide a closer glimpse at when San Antonio police were engaged in an early-morning shootout with a man allegedly firing off rounds at his west-side apartment last month. But the camera of the SWAT officer who ended the shootout wasn't rolling.
The video was shared by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) late Thursday night, including a version narrated by SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso. The incident ended when that SWAT officer's bullet grazed Jose Vazquez's head, halting the gunfire.
No one else was hurt in the incident.
The video shows officers responding to an apartment complex in the 6900 block of Timbercreek, the root of multiple 911 calls made to police just before 2 a.m. on Jan. 9, according to Moscoso.
"I don't want to go out there because he is shooting a gun," one 911 caller can be heard saying. "He's got a big gun."
"They are shooting and it's hitting our walls," a woman on a separate call told a dispatcher. "We keep hearing the bullets fly be."
One officer at the scene can be heard reporting that he hears the suspect "racking a gun" before taking cover. Loud, repeated gunfire is then heard as two officers retreat behind their patrol unit.
According to Moscoso, a SWAT officer in an armored vehicle, Jesse Noriega, was able to shoot at and hit Vazquez. But his body camera footage wasn't provided because of "inadvertent contact" with his equipment or the roof hatch of the vehicle that prevented video from being recorded.
SAPD instead provided footage of another SWAT officer in the driver's seat of the armored vehicle. Seven loud shots can be heard before Noriega audibly says, "That was me, that was me. He had a gun pointed at us here. He has a helmet."
Moscoso said Vazquez was hit multiple times and hospitalized in stable condition. He was later found to be wearing ballistic gear, and isn't visible at any point in the video provided by SAPD.
Police say Vasquez was grazed in the head by a bullet and later hospitalized in stable condition.
Vazquez, 43, remains jailed on charges of deadly conduct with a firearm and aggravated assault against a public servant.
The officer who shot Vasquez is currently on administrative duty.
