Leon Springs man drowns at Boerne City Lake

Officials say the man had spent the day fishing, got hot and went into the water to cool off.

BOERNE, Texas — A man from Leon Springs drowned at Boerne City Lake after spending the day fishing, officials say.

The Boerne Fire Department Water Rescue Team, with help from the Texas Game Wardens, recovered the body of the man on Sunday morning.

The initial calls to 911 came in just before 10:45 p.m. on Saturday.

It is believed the man had spent Saturday afternoon and evening fishing at the lake, then complained of being hot and went into the water to cool down.

Witnesses told police that it appeared the man reached some deep water, and went under, then began calling for help.

The other guests with him at the lake couldn't swim and so they called 911 for help.

Officials say the man had not been drinking alcohol.

Sonar technology was used in the recovery efforts that began Sunday morning. The man was recovered in water about 8-10 feet deep.

The man has been identified by Ebensberger Fisher funeral home as Jorge Zavala, 40, from Honduras.

Boerne City Lake has since reopened to the public.
