SAN ANTONIO — Lightning is about to strike a local theatre. A San Antonio native author's work is being adapted on stage at a new show at the Magik Theatre downtown.
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical will run from July 1-August 6. The show is an adaptation of San Antonio author Rick Riordan's iconic bestseller. The story follows Jackson as he discovers he is the son of a Greek god and has special powers.
The musical takes all the action and intrigue of the book and sets it to an original rock score by Rob Rokicki.
The book was the first novel in a series featuring Percy Jackson from Riordan, who is an Alamo Heights High School alum. The author also worked as a teacher at St. Mary's Hall.
“Magik’s The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical takes the audience on an action packed epic adventure,” says Magik Theatre Artistic Director Anthony Runfola. “Brilliantly snuck into the storyline are mentions of Percy’s struggles with ADHD and dyslexia, a nod to Riordan’s own son’s diagnosis at the time the story was written."
As part of the show's run, the theatre is going to host two summer camps with a Percy Jackson theme. The Percy Jackson Musical Theatre Experience takes place the weeks of July 10-14 and July 17-21. The camp will feature master classes from professionals, and campers will be able to see a full matinee performance of the show. Click here for more information on the camps.
Also, in keeping with Magik Theatre's mission, there will be three special performances to make the show accessible for everyone. Below are the three performances:
- American Sign Language Interpreted Performance | Saturday, July 29, 2:00 pm.
- Sensory-Friendly Performance | Wednesday, July 26, 10:30 am.
- Pay What You Wish Performance | Thursday, July 20, 2:00 pm.
