LIVE OAK, Texas — The Live Oak Police Department just installed new technology on uniforms and inside the patrol units that capture every move of its officers while on duty.
KENS 5 got a behind the scenes look to see how it works, as the department reports this is for safety and transparency.
Assistant Chief Michael Fratus said this new system is an android base platform.
"It is very technology driven," he said. "It is not just a GoPro on steroids. There is a lot of automation we can do with it just to make sure we capture everything we need to capture."
He elaborated by saying the cameras can automatically start recording depending on the call or even movement of the officer. The two-part system is body camera and dash camera. As for the body camera, it is fitted for an officer's uniform.
"It is secure in there and zips up," he said. "The chances of it ever coming undone, it is not going to happen."
Fratus said the body camera and dash camera both work together. The officer can even view the videos from their unit.
"We can actually view the dash cam and body cam simultaneously," he said. "So as the officers are recording we are uploading in real time, videos are available more quickly."
He said this can also help get evidence to the DA's office more effectively. Bottom line, Fratus said this new system with Utility, Inc. is a safeguard for officers and the public.
"It is all about the transparency," he said. "We want to make sure we are capturing everything that we need to be capturing."
Fratus said all 22 officers and investigators received this new technology. It even has a built in GPS system so they can not only see where the police car is located, but the officer as well.
