'God gave me strength' | Business owner shot at while opening up his auto shop

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office is searching for two suspects involved in the aggravated robbery Saturday morning on the northeast side.

SAN ANTONIO — A northeast-side business owner said he had to dodge bullets while opening up his auto shop Saturday morning.

The chaotic confrontation was caught on surveillance cameras. The shop owner is hoping it will help deputies track down the suspects.

It happened around 5:45 a.m. at the RG3 Collision and Custom Repair Center off Walzem Road. Rafael Guerra said he usually is not the one who opens up the shop but decided that morning to go in early to help his guys out.

He said when he pulled up to unlock the gate, another vehicle drove up quickly and parked in front of him.

“I just heard somebody yelling behind me and I turned around, and I see the gun to my face and I remember saying, 'What are you doing? What do you want?'” Guerra said.

He said two armed men were demanding his keys and wallet. He said he put his hands in the air and tried to keep eye contact with the suspects. Then, he said one of the suspects fired off two shots.

“He did fire the weapon,” Guerra said. “I hit the gun down and he shot again and grazed my leg.”

The suspects are then seen on camera attempting to drive off in his car but were unsuccessful. He said they eventually got back in the vehicle they pulled up in and drove off. Guerra only walked away with minor injuries and the suspects got away with a handbag.

“God was shielding and taking care of me," Guerra said. "My wife, we just found out she’s pregnant, that’s what popped into my mind, 'Oh no not right now,'”

Guerra said he believes he was a random target, especially since the vehicle the suspects were attempting to steal is recognizable.

He said his main concern is that they will seriously hurt or kill someone if they are not caught.

“God gave me the strength to be able to get out of it, give me the right words to speak, stay calm and just look at them right in the eyes, because they were going to have to face a person, not my back, because that’s too easy,” Guerra said.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case and does have a copy of the videos. If you know anything about the incident, give them a call.
