'A crapshoot' | Local restaurant grapples with crawfish shortage across Gulf Coast

With the majority of Louisiana still in a drought, crawfish production is impacted, from the size to the price.

SAN ANTONIO — Everywhere else it's just Tuesday - but in Louisiana, Mardi Gras is being celebrated with Fat Tuesday in full force.

Area restaurants and celebrations are trying to bring that Louisiana feel here in San Antonio, but finding crawfish this Mardi Gras is somewhat of a challenge across the Gulf Coast.

Fish City Grill does have crawfish on their menu today, however getting the crawfish in the first place was not an easy task.

"As a matter of fact, I erased it off the chalkboard for a minute, you know, thinking man there just might not be a there just might be a chance that we won't get it for Mardi Gras," said Rocky Cheek, a general manager with Fish City Grill.

With the majority of Louisiana still in a drought, Cheek explained its had large impacts on crawfish production as a whole.

What's happening right now is we're getting more field run crawfish," he said. "So you're going to have some of the smaller ones mixed in with the big ones instead of getting like a graded kind of crawfish."

Crawfish this year is also a lot more expensive.

"We actually are at $13.99 a pound right now, which for this time of year is elevated, you know, but nine times out of ten we'd be at % $7.99 a pound, you know, sometimes even $6.99," Cheek said. "We're just happy to have them again. You know, we don't know when the peak season is going to be. It's just all a crapshoot this year."
