SAN ANTONIO -- Two high school rivals. One huge football game.
Brandeis and O'conner High Schools face off tomorrow on the northwest side. However, it's prompted two chain restaurants to beef up security in the area.
The decision comes after an off-the-field food fight last year between these bitter rivals.
It's the biggest football game of the year. "Everyone is buying tickets already," said Frida Valencia, a Brandeis High School student. And Brandeis High school is undefeated. "Pretty excited for the game," said Jorge Orizaga, another Brandeis High School
And O'Connor, not far off, has a nearly unblemished record of 6-1.
"What makes it a special event is the rivalry and community involvement," said Brandeis High School Football Coach John Campbell.
And it's that rivalry that has the community talking. "Last year was crazy at Whataburger I showed up and there was people on the table it was crazy," said Orizaga.
A student recorded video of that food fight and it went viral.
"Some guy threw a milkshake and it went crazy you know," said Orizaga. "I know tomorrow there will be some type of fight," said Valencia.
Because of after-the-game concerns, a spokesperson for Whataburger told KENS 5 it's increasing security at its franchises near the schools.
However, coaches for both teams said talk of a friendly-food-fight is the least of their worries.
"The best you can do is try to tune that out and concentrate on the task at hand," said O'Connor High School Football Coach, James Malesky.
Students also show up, typically at the Arby's down the street after the game. A spokesperson for that restaurant chain told KENS 5 it will have more staff on hand tomorrow night to deal with what it expects to be a big crowd.
In a statement, Whataburger told KENS 5:
Whataburger is committed to providing the best possible experience for all of our customers. As a precaution, we are increasing security at our restaurants near O'Connor and Brandeis High Schools. Whataburger welcomes students from both schools to our restaurants. We're confident they will represent themselves in a positive way, and we look forward to serving them after a fun night of football."
