VIA Metropolitan Transit said it's been fairly close to the Lone Star Rail project so far.

"Lone Star Rail has come forward and requested that we include in our FY16 budget about $500,000 to help support continued planning on their part of the system," said Jeffrey Arndt, VIA President and CEO.

The rail project is still in the developing stages, but as City Councilman Joe Krier said, San Antonio has much to gain from local support for the commuter rail line.

"I think a committment by VIA absolutely helps Lone Star Rail move the entire project forward in every aspect," Krier said.

"VIA would be that final mile for the people that come into or leave San Antonio via Lone Star Rail," Arndt said.

On Sept. 10, the council will vote on whether to approve an initial investment of $500,000 for the project.

"The day we had a briefing on it, from city council, every single member of council testified in favor of it," Krier said.

On Sept. 14, Arndt said the public will have its chance to give input on VIA's proposed budget, including any contribution it hopes to make to the Lone Star Rail line.
