LOVE MY JOB: HEB employee on the job for more than 50 years

SAN ANTONIO -- HEB is known to keep not only their customers happy, but also their employees.

SAN ANTONIO -- HEB is known to keep not only their customers happy, but also their employees.

One man loves his job so much that he’s stuck around for more than 50 years.

Johnny Brown knows his way around HEB.

“I started as part time with the school," Brown said.

He started with the company back in 1967 as part of his work study program in high school.

Brown went full time after graduation.

"I kind of worked my way up," said Brown, who's now a receiver/controller for the company.

Brown's worked in almost every area of the store and in more than a dozen locations.

He has 50 years under his belt.

"I don't feel like 50 years, you know, but time flew!" Brown said.

He's been a bagger, checker, stocker and even an assistant service manager.

These days you can find Brown in the receiving department.

"I liked it. It was interesting checking in merchandise. Where all the groceries come from," Brown said.

Brown has seen the changes HEB has undergone.

"There is a lot that has changed in the HEB culture, and Johnny has embraced it,” operations leader Erik Flowers said. “He's taken all challenges and has weathered through them and has been successful in making it to the next."

"We grew together all these 50 years,” Brown said.

However, after 12 years in receiving, Brown plans on slowing things down soon.

He's going to move to part-time work.

His advice for those looking to gain some longevity in their workplace?

"It's your destiny," he said. "Whatever you want to do. You never know. It's up to you."
