Loved ones remember San Antonio father fatally shot at northwest-side bus stop

The Plata family said Ricardo "Rick" Plata spent 40 days in the ICU until he lost his tough fight on October 17.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio father who was shot at a bus stop in September has died from his injuries. More than a month later, his killer still hasn't been caught.

The Plata family said Ricardo, who went by Rick, spent 40 days in the ICU and his lost his tough fight on October 17.

His niece Brenna Plata-Robles and his son Joseph Plata, spoke to KENS 5 about the tragic loss.

"I thought maybe he had a little bit longer," Plata-Robles said. "It is our tragedy, but it also happens every day."

"He did fight through the whole 40 days," his son said. "He did everything he could."

On September 7, San Antonio Police said Rick was waiting at a bus stop at West Skyview Drive and Bandera Road when he was shot several times. After he was hurt, the family said he was still conscious to talk to emergency crews.

"He was able to respond to the paramedics and tell them to call my family and who to call," Plata-Robles said.

To this day, investigators still don't know what led to the shooting or who pulled the trigger.

"He didn't deserve that," Plata-Robles said. "No one does."

The family said Rick was a loving man who deeply cared for others, especially his family, and that's how they want to remember him.

"He loved the outdoors," she said. "He loved to ride his bike."

Police said this is now a murder investigation. As for Joseph, he had this message for his father's killer.

"I hope you are comfortable with your life," he said. "As they say, may the Lord have mercy on your soul. But, at this moment in time I don't believe I will."

The family plans to hold a vigil Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. where the shooting happened.

SAPD said this is still an active investigation and wouldn't comment about any leads. If you know anything about this case, you are urged to contact police.
