SAN ANTONIO — A homeless man entered a San Antonio elementary school after a student let him into the building Wednesday afternoon, district officials say.
San Antonio and East Central ISD police received information that a "suspicious man" was hanging around Highland Forest Elementary School around 1:30 p.m. District officials say the man jumped the fence, knocked on the back door and was allowed inside by a passing student.
The man was inside the school for an unknown amount of time before a campus police officer saw him. Officials say that officer tried to confront the man before he fled. He was quickly found at a nearby restaurant with help from Texas DPS.
Authorities say the man was unarmed and no one was hurt. Officials believe the man was trying to cut through the school due to the bad weather.
The man will be facing charges for trespassing and evading arrest.
A message sent to parents alerted them of the situation, saying the school was on a Hold Alert per their standard protocol. The statement also explained that a staff member noticed an unknown man near the campus but that campus police quickly took action and apprehended the man.
Officials say the hold was lifted around 2 p.m.
District officials say they will continue to train students and teachers about safety.
