SAN ANTONIO — A man has been arrested after police say he used a shovel as a weapon and attacked two victims on the south side of San Antonio.
San Antonio Police were called out to the 2600 block of West Travis Street, in between West Martin Street and West Commerce Street, on April 7 for reports of a fight.
When officers arrived, the victims told police they had been attacked by a man with a shovel and identified him to police as Joe Frank Arechiga, 37.
According to one of the victims, the suspect was armed with a shovel and chasing after two young children on bikes in the alley. The victim told officers she thought he was trying to assault the kids, so they decided to get involved to protect the kids, police say.
The suspect then turned his focus onto the 68-year-old victim and began hitting him with the shovel, according to police. When the second victim, 21, saw her grandfather being assaulted by the suspect, she tried to stop him.
Police say the suspect hit the young woman's head with the shovel causing a visible contusion, then ran off. The older victim received a cut on his forearm.
Detectives determined that Arechiga used a shovel and that in it's manner and its use, was capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to the victims. He was arrested and is being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
