SAN ANTONIO — A man was badly burned, a dog was rescued and several families are now without a home after an overnight fire ripped through an apartment complex on the northeast side of town.
San Antonio firefighters responded to reports of an injury call at The Maya Apartments located on the 1900 block of Loop 410 at Ira Lee Road around 10:52 p.m. Tuesday night. It turns out it was also a fast-moving fire.
When crews arrived, they not only found the victim but heavy fire to one of the buildings. At that point, it was upgraded to a second alarm fire. SAFD said that crews rescued a dog from a first floor apartment and searched for a person who was reportedly trapped. However, after combing the property no one was found.
It’s unclear how this fire started, but investigators are looking into the cause. It started on the second floor of the apartments.
Fortunely, a fire department spokesperson says crews got the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
By that time there was significant damage to multiple apartment units.
In total, firefighters checked out 18 apartments but it’s unclear how many tenants are affected.
“Looks likes the damage is going to be held to six apartments total, four of them with fire damage and the other two with smoke and water damage," said the SAFD spokesman. "We are working to relocate residents.”
The apartment manager was called to relocate the residents from the six damaged apartments. The Red Cross will be called if there are any issues, officials said.
As for the victim, they were taken to BAMC in serious condition. Crews told us that patient had substantial burns to their body. No other injuries were reported.
There is no estimate on the amount of damages caused.
This is a developing story.
