SAN ANTONIO — A man was killed in what police are saying was a crash caused by a person driving while intoxicated.

San Antonio Police responded to the 7300 block of SW Loop 410 around 3:15 a.m. Sunday morning for what was initially called a 'welfare check,' but turned out to be a major accident.

The caller had told police that a minivan appeared to be wrecked and it looked like someone was trying to perform CPR on the passenger.

Firefighters arrived first and spoke to the 41-year-old suspect, who was identified as the driver of the minivan. Police got there and saw the victim laying in the back of the van, unresponsive.

The 39-year-old victim was pulled from the van and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the van had struck a nearby unoccupied TXDOT vehicle in place of a damaged guardrail.

Police say the suspect's story was inconsistent and he did not acknowledge the victim’s death. The victim's injuries throughout his body indicated a traumatic death.

The suspect was booked for DWI.

Police are investigating. No other information was available.

This is a developing story.
