Man fatally shot during home invasion while his girlfriend and child hid in a closet

The suspect forced himself in the second story apartment after knocking and shot the victim in the face with a rifle.

SAN ANTONIO — A home invasion on the north side of town turned deadly after the suspect shot the victim in the face with a rifle, while a woman and child hid in a closet.

San Antonio Police officers responded to the 1100 block of Patricia Drive, near Blanco Road and West Avenue, around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a shooting in progress.

When officers arrived, they found the victim collapsed outside of the apartment in the breezeway near the stairs, with a gunshot wound. The man died shortly afterward.

Police say the suspect forced himself inside the front door then fired at the man, point-blank with a rifle in the face, then drove off. Officers described this as a gruesome scene.

The man's girlfriend and their child were also home at the time when he was shot. Police say they hid in a closet until officers arrived at the scene of the apartment complex where they lived.

During their investigation, police found drugs inside the apartment but did not discuss the evidence further.

At last check, the shooter had not been found. Police say he took off in a white colored sedan.

This is a developing story.
