SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio family is in shock and now left planning an unexpected funeral. They're using their painful loss as a reminder to everyone who gets behind the wheel.
On Friday night, San Antonio Police said Edward 'Eddie' Fernandez was riding his scooter when he was hit and killed off South Zarzamora near Southwest Military Drive.
The victim's sister, Frances Sendejo spoke to KENS 5 where the crash happened. She said she is still at a loss for words.
"Stunned," Sendejo said. "In shock, and in pain."
On Friday night, police said Fernandez was riding his scooter with no lights on when a driver didn't see him. Police said he was crossing the wrong way when he was hit near South Park Mall. Sendejo said her brother was out running errands all day and had just picked up his wife's medicine.
"He loved his family," she said. "But he loved his scooter and was trying to go here and there. We would tell him, 'you can't be riding around in the scooter.'"
Sendejo said the family learned another driver named Johnny stopped to help before police and paramedics got there.
"He said he flipped over and put him on his knee," the sister said. "He said he was really bad. And he tried to get him to breathe."
The family said that it brings them comfort knowing Fernandez did not die alone.
"For us he is like an angel," she said. "Because my brother had someone there to hold his hand and comfort him."
A close friend set up a memorial right by where the crash happened.
"It was an accident overall," she said. "No one to blame. It was an accident. Life is short. From one day to the next, they are gone. Just slow down. I myself, I have to practice what I preach."
The family is grateful for the support during this trying time. They are hoping to host a fundraiser soon to raise money for funeral expense.
As for the driver that hit Fernandez, police said the driver did stop and stay behind. At last check, police said no charges are expected to be filed.
