Man riding dirt bike in southeast San Antonio neighborhood hit, killed by SUV

Officials say no charges have been filed and the crash appears to have been an accident.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police say a man was hit and killed while riding a dirt bike down a southeast-side neighborhood street Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, who police believe is about 21-years-old, was riding a small street bike along the sidewalk near the intersection of South Palmetto and Schley Avenue at a high rate of speed when a Silver SUV going southbound approached the intersection.

That's when the dirt bike entered the driver's side of the SUV's blind spot and attempted to cross into the street onto the other sidewalk

Police say the driver turned left striking the dirt bike, causing the man to fly off. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAAMC) where he was pronounced dead. His next of kin was notified by authorities.

Officials say no charges have been filed and the crash appears to have been an accident.

The driver of the dirt bike was not wearing a helmet or any protective gear, according to police and was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The bikes are not street legal and police say they pose a safety risk to everyone involved. Neighbors say people driving dirt bikes and ATVs in the southeast side neighborhood has become more common.
