Man arrested after allegedly stealing a person's vehicle who was trying to give him money, police say

Two officers were inside the patrol car that was hit but no injuries were reported.

SAN ANTONIO — A 20-year-old man allegedly led San Antonio police on a chase while driving a car he stole from someone who had offered him money.

Jesse Cardoza, 20, was arrested on June 7 in the 1400 block of Zarzamora. Police say a 35-year-old man stopped to "give a panhandler," who was Cardoza, money before Cardoza "assaulted the victim" and took their car.

Officers located the vehicle while the Cardoza was still behind the wheel, saying that instead of pulling over he kept on driving while trying to evade police. He eventually crashed into an SAPD patrol unit during the ensuing chase, police say, after which Cardoza was taken into custody.

There were two officers in the unit he allegedly crashed into, but neither were hurt.

Cardoza faces charges of robbery, evading arrest and aggravated assault on an officer. He remains jailed as of Friday.
