SAN ANTONIO — A man was rescued from high water after getting stranded on a cement block in a drainage culvert north of downtown Monday.
Heavy rain moved quickly through San Antonio Monday morning, causing some rushing water in drainage areas. The fire department confirmed they responded to a water rescue in the 2100 block of St. Cloud, near Babcock, around 10:20 a.m.
The man who was rescued, Vincent Valenzuela, spoke with KENS 5 after the ordeal and said he had been asleep in the area when he woke up to water pouring into the ditch. He says he quickly moved to get on top of a cement block for temporary safety, but the rushing water left him stranded there.
A good Samaritan in the area who spotted him called 911 and the fire department responded. Firefighters were able to get him into a safety vest and rescue him.
He says he will seek shelter elsewhere tonight given the rain.
