Man shot by suspects trying to steal his vehicle after confronting them, police say

The homeowner saw the three men on camera and went outside to scare them off. At some point, at least one gun was drawn by one of the suspects and shots were fired.

SAN ANTONIO — A northwest-side homeowner was shot after confronting the three suspects who were trying to steal a vehicle from his property, police say.

San Antonio Police responded to the 6300 block of Bowman Ridge near De Zavala Road around 3:23 a.m. Saturday for reports of a shooting in progress.

According to the police sergeant at the scene, at least three men were trying to break into a vehicle when the homeowner saw them on a doorbell camera. The victim's mother told KENS 5 he opened the door and shouted "get away from my car."

At least one gun was drawn by one of the suspects and shots were fired. The homeowner, a man in his 30s, was hit once in the chest. He was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to the victim's mother, parts of the victim's internal organs had to be removed and he continues to fight for his life. She said one of the bullets pierced the victim's back and traveled through the home, ending up in the back yard. She also said the suspects ducked behind the stolen Kia and began firing at her home and a neighbor's home. We're told her house is riddled with bullets and her family is traumatized.

The three would-be car thieves fled from the scene on foot, leaving behind the stolen car they had arrived in.

Police and SAPD Eagle searched the area but were unable to locate the men.

San Antonio police say 20-year-old Desmond Dillard turned himself into authorities on the day of the shooting. Dillard was booked in the Bexar County jail on a $60,000 bond. He made bail on Nov. 29 and has a pre-hearing set for Jan. 16.

Police are still searching for at least two other suspects.
