Man suffered burns and smoke inhalation in fire on west side, officials say

The victim was found sleeping inside a burning, boarded up home when firefighters arrived.

SAN ANTONIO — A man suffered burns and smoke inhalation after he was found by firefighters inside a burning, boarded-up home on the west side early Wednesday morning.

San Antonio firefighters were called out to the 800 block of South San Bernardo Avenue near South General McMullen around 1:44 a.m. for reports of a house fire.

When SAFD arrived, there was visible smoke and flames at the boarded up structure they initially believed to be abandoned. However, inside the burning home, they found a man in his 40s who was sleeping.

He was taken to BAMC to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

The backside of the home was completely burned and officials say the house will be a total loss.

No word on the estimated damages caused by the fire. Fire investigation is on the scene looking for the cause of the fire.

No firefighters were injured.

This fire comes more than a week after another vacant home caught fire on Christmas night. That one was on Edwards Street not far from Burbank High School.
