SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio City Councilman Marc Whyte was arrested on the north side Friday night for allegedly driving while intoxicated, according to Bexar County court records.
Whyte was pulled over during a traffic stop on the NE Loop 410 access road around 11 p.m. Friday, according to SAPD. He has since been released on bail.
Officials say he showed signs of intoxication and was evaluated for driving while intoxicated. He was arrested and had a bond set at $2,000, according to records, before posting bail on Saturday.
Councilman Marc Whyte took over for former Councilman Clayton Perry, who also was charged with a DWI nearly one year ago.
Whyte sent KENS 5 the following statement on Saturday after the news of his arrest broke:
"I did not feel intoxicated when I drove home last night. I never get behind the wheel when I feel as if I’ve had too much to drink. But that isn’t point. Nobody should drive even if they have had just one drink. I take full ownership over my actions, and I apologize to the residents of District 10, my family, friends, counsel colleagues and anyone else who I have let down."
A warrant for a blood sample says Whyte refused to submit to a blood test or breathalyzer. Records indicate that the warrant was approved and authorities drew his blood, though the results of the test were not included. The warrant says the officer saw Whyte driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone before changing lanes without signaling and drifting in and out of his lane.
The officer said Whyte's eyes were glossy red and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol. When asked if he'd been drinking, Whyte reportedly admitted to drinking three beers.
