SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man has accepted a 30-year sentence for the murder of a man during a dispute last May.
KENS 5 previously reported police had arrested 23-year-old Matthew Isaac Ortiz after he confessed to shooting and killing 28-year-old Charles “Ruso” Martinez in May 2023.
According to a release from the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office, Martinez was shot during a breakup argument with his girlfriend. Martinez reportedly attempted to open the driver’s door of the vehicle driven by his girlfriend where Ortiz was seated, and attempted to reach inside the vehicle when he was fatally shot by Ortiz.
Ortiz claimed self-defense, telling law enforcement that he saw Martinez assaulting the other person in the vehicle and appeared to be armed.
Ortiz accepted a guilty plea agreement, resulting in a prison sentence of 30 years.
"Today, we were able to provide accountability, which ensures the safety of our communities while also bringing closure to the Martinez family," said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales in a statement.
