Mattress fire in unoccupied apartment believed to have been started by squatters

Officials say that many of the units are unoccupied, and all of the empty units had signs of squatters.

SAN ANTONIO — Officials believe that squatters may have started a fire in an unoccupied apartment just north of downtown near North Star Mall.

San Antonio firefighters responded to the 8500 block of Wakefield Drive close to McCullough Avenue around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a fire.

Firefighters arrived to see smoke showing from a first-floor apartment. Once they got inside, they discovered the apartment was unoccupied and found a boxspring on fire. It was extinguished quickly.

The building was not damaged, according to officials at the scene. Only the contents of the apartment burned.

Firefighters say that many of the units are unoccupied, but all of them had signs of squatters. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters will be investigating the cause.

This is a developing story.
