WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Mayor Ron Nirenberg is in Washington, D.C. for an announcement with large implications for the Texas border.
President Biden is expected to sign an executive order that would put a daily limit on asylum requests. Sheriff Javier Salazar will be there too, as the plan to crackdown on border crossings is revealed.
This is expected to be the president’s most aggressive move yet when it comes to controlling numbers at the border. This plan would be triggered once the number of daily encounters hits 2,500 people.
Which, according to CBS News, is already happening at the border. Last month, Border Patrol recorded an average of 3,800 migrant apprehensions daily.
With this order in place, it would cut that number back and asylum seekers could be deported as a result.
Local immigration attorney Carlos Castaneda says a provision in the Immigration and Nationality Act gives presidents a lot of discretion when it comes to immigration entry into the United States.
However, he has his doubts about the order.
"On the other hand, I consider this such an extraordinary set that at least initially, we are going to see some pauses on that," said Castaneda. "I actually have doubts we will see this actually implemented rigidly."
Along with the Bexar County Sheriff, we did confirm Mayor Ron Nirenberg will be at the White House for Tuesday’s announcement.
"I expect President Biden's announcement to be an important development for San Antonio and the border region," said Mayor Nirenberg. "Congress has failed to enact the immigration reform our station needs and President Biden has been forced to cope with a crisis largely created by congressional inaction."
While this is set to be announced, immigration experts do expect this to be challenged in court.
