LINCOLN PARK, Mich. — A Michigan Motor Carrier Officer and the driver of another vehicle were taken to the hospital Friday morning after a crash outside of Detroit. The driver of the other vehicle was killed as a result of the crash, according to the Michigan State Police.
On Sunday evening, the Michigan State Police announced that the officer, Daniel Kerstetter, 45, will be taken off of life support pending the completion of his family’s decision to donate his organs.
MSP says Officer Kerstetter was not able to overcome his injuries sustained in the crash.
Motor Carrier Officers are armed members of the Michigan State Police responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement.
Officer Kerstetter had conducted a traffic stop on a semi around 8:40 a.m. on Friday on I-75 northbound near Dixie Highway in Lincoln Park, which is just outside of Detroit.
According to MSP, a vehicle traveling north then struck the officer's vehicle. Officer Kerstetter was in the front seat of the patrol car, wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pinned between the patrol vehicle and the semi-truck in front of them. Emergency response crews had to extricate him from his vehicle.
Both the officer and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to the hospital with what MSP described as "serious" injuries after the crash.
The driver who hit Officer Kerstetter has since died, according to Michigan State Police. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
Kerstetter had a wife and three children.
He had been a member of the Michigan State Police since January 2023.
Traffic cameras captured a photograph of backed-up roadway conditions on I-75 due to the crash.
Michigan State Police said on social media Friday morning that they are conducting an investigation on scene.
I-75 has been closed in the vicinity of the crash.
