Burgers, fries, and pizza are now all on the menu at the Bexar County Jail.
Starting this month, the Bexar County Sheriff s Ofiice will allow hot meals to be delivered by Aramark s ICare food services to inmates.
It's a privilege that we provide the inmates provided that they follow all the rules, said Sheriff Armado Ortiz.
By allowing ICare food services to offer food delivery to inmates, the company has agreed to give the county nearly a third of the proceeds.
A cheeseburger with fries will cost an inmate nearly $9.00, of which roughly $3.00 to go directly to the sheriff's department.
The sheriff s office expects to bring in $15,000 this year from the program.
I know there s going to be some resentment from the general public, said Sheriff Ortiz. They say inmates should not be giving such privileges, but we need to keep in mind that the majority of the people in this jail are waiting to go to court; they haven't been convicted of any crime.
Sheriff Ortiz said he s not going to let this get out of hand.
Inmates can only order this food from the online service a few times a weeks and he said, much like television privileges, guards can take it away if inmate misbehave.
