NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — A New Braunfels 9-year-old who has been diagnosed with a terminal disease is traveling through 30 states in 10 days with a biker group to follow his passion which are motorcycles. A nonprofit – Mile Monsters Inc. is championing his cause.
For most adults, traveling the country in a car seems impossible. Let alone via motorcycle. Being a kid with Duchenne muscular dystrophy makes the task all the more daunting. For Gaven Quirarte nothing is slowing him down – not even his illness.
Gaven's mother, Jessica Quirarte says in June 2020 his family came to terms with reality. Gaven being 9 years old - she says most boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy lose their ability to walk at the age of 10.
“Not many kids living with this disease have the outlook of life that he does.”
Despite his diagnosis, Gaven has been living each day like his last - especially on the back of a motorcycle,
"It's fun," he said. "Cold sometimes."
Riding across 30 states with the biker group - Mile Monsters Inc. the long distance endurance charity riders - ride for heroes – like Gaven.
"Riot" Wyatt, a biker with the nonprofit says what children experience on the rides is indescribable.
“They all need somebody on their side to fight, to show them that there’s a world out there to see,” Wyatt said.
Gaven's physical therapist of two years – Kassandra Banda made sure he was ready for his 10-day journey across the country.
“No matter the day, he shows up to every single physical therapy session and gives it his all," Banda said. “I’m a true believer that it takes a village to come together and help Gaven live the best quality of life.”
Gaven will be returning to San Antonio July 18 at the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute TeletonUSA where there will be a welcome party waiting for him. If you would like to follow Gaven’s progress and journey, click here.
