New Braunfels debates closing time for bars

It's the same argument used by both sides in the debate over the closing time of bars in New Braunfels - it will keep drunk drivers off the road.
Under the current city ordinance, bars in New Braunfels must shut their doors at midnight and 1:00 a.m. on Saturdays. However, some want to push back the time to put the city on par with neighboring cities, like San Marcos, Austin and San Antonio, In those cities people can drink until 2:00 a.m.
By extending hours to 2:00 a.m., some say fewer residents would be driving home from neighboring communities on I-35 after a night of drinking at the bars.
It's this same argument, the prevention of drunk drivers, that was the reason nearly thirty years ago city council voted to close the bars down an hour earlier in the first place.
So while the two sides of this debate disagree on the means, at least the two agree on the intended outcome.
